DEVELOPING MUSCLE is one of the best ways to control weight because it causes a double reducing effect. First, resistance training is vigorous physical activity; a significant number of calories are burned during exercise. Second, the additional muscle tissue produced in resistance training increases resting metabolism; calories are burned at a higher rate all day long - regardless of activity or inactivity.

MAINTAINING MUSCLE is a challenge most of us face as we age. As we age, muscle fibers shrink in both size and number. Studies indicate that people who train with weights - either free weights or resistance machines - can not only maintain muscle mass and strength into old age, but can also reverse muscle loss.

MANAGING WEIGHT Resistance training may be the best way to control weight. In fact, strength or resistance exercises will resulting greater weight loss than aerobic exercises. One more plus on the side of resistance training is that adding muscle helps offset the metabolism-lowering effect of dieting and losing weight.
